Udall: Emergency Funding for States, Families in Need will Prevent Budget Cuts, Keep Teachers in Classrooms

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Mark Udall praised the Senate for fighting back partisan gridlock and voting to move forward with a measure to help states, including Colorado, meet emergency needs, save jobs and avoid severe budget cuts.

The measure, an amendment to a larger bill, was a priority for Colorado communities still struggling with the economic downturn. It provides nearly $159 million to the state in Medicaid matching funds and nearly $160 million to help prevent the loss of almost 2,400 education-related jobs in the state. The Senate’s 61-38 vote to prevent a filibuster means a final up-or-down vote on the measure can happen by tomorrow afternoon at the latest.

“Today’s vote means we are on track to help prevent the layoffs of thousands of teachers and first responders in Colorado,” Senator Udall said. “This amendment means some relief for Coloradans and communities across our state, and I’m proud that we were able to put aside our differences and not allow partisan gridlock to hold the Senate hostage this time.”
