Students at Landmark academy at reunion celebrate first annual latin culture week

Landmark Academy at Reunion , a tuition-free public charter school, recently hosted their First Annual Latin Culture Week, a week focused on educating students on the various aspects of Latin culture, from music and art to sports and celebrities, through unique activities. During the week-long celebration, students were able to step into the lives of the Aztecs, Incas and Mayans with Latin culture lessons through piñata making, cultural crafts, songs, traditional foods and more. Students made maracas and learned a traditional Mexican Hat Dance; created Aztec suns working with metal tooling; and studied different countries in Mexico , Central America and South America . Aztec dancers from the Colorado Folk Arts Council also visited with students and educated them on the spiritual and traditional aspects of Aztec culture through dance. “We reside in a community with strong Latin and Hispanic roots,” said Matt Carlton, principal of Landmark Academy at Reunion . “Our community culture is important to us at Landmark. School Nurse Day Is Wednesday, May 11

This week schools across the nation and in Colorado will celebrate a profession that advances the well-being, academic success and life-long achievement of students. National School Nurse Day was established in 1972 to foster a better understanding of the role of school nurses in the educational setting.

Today, more than 60,000 school nurses across the country:

Promote health and safety;
Intervene with actual and potential health problems;
Provide case management services;
Actively collaborate with others to build student/family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy and learning.

“The Colorado Department of Education celebrates and acknowledges the accomplishments of school nurses everywhere and their efforts to meet the needs of today’s student by improving the effective delivery of healthcare in schools,” said Kathleen Patrick, assistant director of health and wellness for the department. “National School Nurse Day is a time to celebrate the nursing profession and the specialty of school nursing.”

National School Nurse Day falls on the Wednesday during National Nurses Week, May 6 – 12, ending on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of nursing.

“National School Nurse Day provides an opportunity for school nurses to articulate what they do to remove or minimize health-related barriers to student success,” said Sandi Delack, president of the National Association of School Nurses. “We are school nurses; we support student success—which is priority one.”
