School News: Six Brighton youth chosen to be honored

Students at Landmark academy at reunion celebrate first annual latin culture week

Landmark Academy at Reunion , a tuition-free public charter school, recently hosted their First Annual Latin Culture Week, a week focused on educating students on the various aspects of Latin culture, from music and art to sports and celebrities, through unique activities. During the week-long celebration, students were able to step into the lives of the Aztecs, Incas and Mayans with Latin culture lessons through piñata making, cultural crafts, songs, traditional foods and more. Students made maracas and learned a traditional Mexican Hat Dance; created Aztec suns working with metal tooling; and studied different countries in Mexico , Central America and South America . Aztec dancers from the Colorado Folk Arts Council also visited with students and educated them on the spiritual and traditional aspects of Aztec culture through dance. “We reside in a community with strong Latin and Hispanic roots,” said Matt Carlton, principal of Landmark Academy at Reunion . “Our community culture is important to us at Landmark. Six Brighton youth chosen to be honored

The Adams County Metropolitan Mayors and Commissioners Youth Award (MMCYA) program has chosen twenty out of sixty-three youth to be honored at the county level for the MMCYA; six of those youth are from Brighton. The Adams County MMCYA is a two-tiered program that honors teenagers at a local and county level who have triumphed over challenging circumstances, and who now serve as inspirations and role models to their friends, families, and community.

All Brighton teens that were nominated for the local level will be formally recognized at a City Council meeting on April 5. All other youth that were nominated will be recognized by their respective cities. The 20 nominees who will go on to the county level, including the six youth from Brighton, and youth from the surrounding communities of Thornton, Northglenn, Hyland Hills, Commerce City, Westminster and unincorporated Adams County will be honored on April 15 at the Riverdale Country Club in Brighton.

This award encompasses youth in traditional classroom settings, youth who have not finished school, youth in group homes, youth in alternative schools, and emancipated youth.
